The name lavender comes from the Latin word, ‘lavare,’ which means “to wash.” The flowers are grown in France in small spikes that are lavender in color. This herb was used in ancient times for religious purposes and also used to bathe in when one had a headache or needed to relax. Pre-Christian’s used lavender to celebrate the mid-summers eve, which they believed brought stability into one’s life. It is thought that Solomon used lavender in his holy water when blessing his temple. In more modern applications, lavender has been used on St. John’s Day when the lavender is thrown into a fire to help protect against wild spirits roaming the land. It has also been used for weddings by weaving lavender into wreathes that the newlywed couple wear.
