“Chrysanthemum” is derived from Ancient Greek, chrysos (gold) and anthemon (flower). Chrysanthemum flowers are native to east Asia and northeastern Europe. They were first cultivated in China, with a history dating back to at least 15th century BC. Chrysanthemum is known to “attract the soul of the sky and earth” due to enduring cold weather on top of the Yellow Mountain. One of the “Four Gentlemen” of herbs in China (the others being plum blossom, orchid, and bamboo), it was favored by the influential poet Tao Qian and is symbolic of nobility; in ancient China, only nobles were permitted to grow this herb. The beautiful flowers are used in many festivals and shows. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that when there is a delicious tisane of the “golden flower,” happy conversations follow!
